Finding the Right Promotional Item

There are many items on the market that can be used as promotional giveaways, but as with finding your right target you also need to make sure that you are not wasting money on useless items that will be thrown away.

Avoid the “Eye Catchers”

Some promotional items not only have no use whatsoever, they also appear to be unrelated to the product they’re promoting. Most consumers find such items not only useless, but annoying. For example, a shoe company recently sent out a promotional package with four plastic ice cubes in it that light up when you press a button. These plastic ice cubes are not even designed to get cold. Who wants blinking blue plastic ice cubes in their drink? This type of promotional item is described as “edgy” and “eye catching.” Stay away from them!

The Tried and True

Use the tried and true promotional pen, mouse pad, or key ring. These products are useful and they never go out of style. A person can never have too many pens. Do you ever throw away a pen that actually works? Would you toss a mouse pad, even if you don’t need it right now? Best to have it on hand, just in case. Key rings are the same way. You never know when you’ll need one for the shed, the locker, the mail box, the car, the house, or the spare set. These are all items that you know you might need and hesitate to toss. You remember those times when you were digging through the drawer to find one and couldn’t, so, if you don’t use it now, you know you will later.

A promotional product is wasted if it goes directly into the trash. It can’t do the job you paid for it to do. The best way to reach your potential customer is to give him something you know he will keep and use. In this case, the tried and the true are your best bets.
