Display and Trade Show Graphics
Graphics are used on vinyl banners at
trade show displays and as backdrops for a
convention, press conference, or special event
such as a hiring faire or an athletic event.
Multiple display items are often needed,
especially when a company has other sales
outlets or franchises. The design service often
produces a number of different display items in
addition to banners with stands. Such items
include posters and mounted displays to enhance
the company’s professional image and promotional
campaign.
Indoor vs. Outdoor Applications
Indoor displays are usually set up at trade
shows, malls, retail stores, and conferences.
Outdoor displays include vinyl banners, signage,
large posters, streetscape banners, and adhesive
vinyl graphics for vehicles or windows.
Since outdoor displays are exposed to
ultraviolet light and the weather, they need
special water- and UV-proof inks. Special
solvent inks are used that do not fade quickly
in bright sunlight or deteriorate in moisture.
Some suppliers laminate items printed in
water-based inks, but this is not a satisfactory
solution.
For durability, banners that you plan on using
many times, rolling and unrolling them, should
be printed with solvent-based inks. Water-based
inks are more easily scratched and break down
with frequent handling. A banner hanging across
the front of your display table at a trade show
is likely to be rubbed and bumped and may be
subject to spills from drinks, such as coffee.
The more durable your banner, the better.
Artwork
Experienced suppliers of display graphics will
know the types of images and illustrations you
should and shouldn’t use in your designs.
Digital printing devices can print from
illustrations and photos. You can include text,
logos, maps, and anything printable from
programs like Quarkxpress, Coreldraw, and
Illustrator.
The resolution of your originals is a
consideration. While offset printing used for
brochures and magazines requires a resolution of
up to 300 ppi (pixels per inch), display
graphics can have a resolution as low as 50 ppi
(pixels per inch). When shooting your photos,
make them as large as possible. You want to blow
them up for a banner, pop-up display, or road
sign.
Look for a display graphics supplier who can
advise you in clear, simple terms. If you have a
little experience with images and layouts,
you’ll find it’s easy to create striking display
graphics. When designing your display item, keep
it simple; focus on one or two main elements.
Most suppliers, such as Canada Display Graphics,
will make minor adjustments to your files at no
extra charge.
